Walk through the older neighborhoods of Lexington — Chevy Chase, Ashland, Kenwick, Southland, Meadowthorpe — and you'll see the same thing behind most of the walls: plaster and lath. It's the standard wall construction for homes built before the mid-1950s, and a lot of Lexington's most beautiful houses were built then.
Plaster is a great wall to look at and a different beast to mount into. It's harder and denser than drywall, it doesn't crush the same way, and it cracks if you treat it like drywall. A traditional plaster wall is built in layers. Thin strips of wood called lath are nailed horizontally across the wall studs, with a small gap between each strip. Then two or three coats of plaster are troweled over the lath: a scratch coat that squeezes through the gaps and keys the wall together, a brown coat, and a smooth finish coat. The finished wall is typically about ¾" to 1" thick — noticeably thicker and much harder than drywall.
Some homes, especially ones built or remodeled later, have metal lath instead — expanded steel mesh the plaster keys into. It changes how we find studs (more below), but the mounting principles are the same.
Knowing which one you have matters for hardware choice, which is one reason we never quote a plaster-wall job blind. The technique is standard for us; the wall is inspected first.
Why Plaster Changes the Mounting Job
Three things make plaster different from drywall for TV mounting:
- Stud finders lie to you. Consumer stud finders sense density changes behind the wall. Plaster has wildly varying density — lath, gaps between strips, and multiple coats — so finders give false readings, which is how TVs end up mounted on anchors alone.
- Plaster is hard and brittle. Drilling it with a dull bit or too much pressure can chip or crack the finish coat, and cracks in plaster travel. The right technique — a sharp bit, low speed, a pilot hole — makes a clean hole that never spreads.
- Anchors are not optional. Unlike drywall, you can't just sink a screw and hope. Plaster needs the right anchor for its thickness, or a lag bolt into a stud, or both.
How We Find Studs in Plaster
In a house with wood lath, we find studs the reliable way: starting from a known point — an outlet box, a door frame, or a corner — and working off the standard 16-inch stud spacing. A strong neodymium magnet finds the nails holding the lath to the studs, which confirms the stud line. In a house with metal lath, the magnet sticks almost everywhere, so we switch to probing: a thin bit and careful measurement from a known stud.
The goal on every plaster job is the same: get at least the main bolts into real wood studs. A mount bolted to studs is carrying the TV with wood, not with plaster. That's the strongest possible setup, and it's the one we use for anything 55" and up.
When There's No Stud Where You Need One
Sometimes the perfect TV spot has no stud behind it — a window wall, a wide span between studs, or a fireplace wall where the flue takes the space. That's when anchors come in, and not all anchors belong in plaster:
- Toggle bolts — the right choice for plaster. The wings open behind the wall and clamp against the back of the plaster and lath, spreading the load across a wide area. They're what we use when a stud isn't available.
- Molly bolts (hollow-wall anchors) — can work in plaster when the hole is sized exactly, but over-tightening can collapse them or spin them loose in hard plaster. We use them selectively.
- Plastic drywall anchors — not for TVs. They rely on the wall material gripping them, and plaster is too hard and too brittle to grip them reliably.
For a heavier TV with no stud available, we distribute the load across several toggle bolts and use a mount with more anchor points. And if the wall is plaster over brick or block — which happens in some of Lexington's older commercial buildings and additions — it becomes a masonry job, anchored the same way we mount to brick and stone fireplaces.
Drilling Plaster Without Cracking It
The fear most homeowners have is real: a crack that starts at a drill hole and runs six inches down the wall. Cracks like that come from bad technique, and they're preventable:
- Sharp bit, low speed. A carbide-tipped bit at low RPM cuts through plaster cleanly. High speed with a dull bit is what chips the finish coat.
- Pilot holes first. Start small, then step up to the final bit size. It keeps the plaster from grabbing and spinning the bit.
- Don't hammer. Plaster is not masonry — impact force is exactly what cracks it.
- Watch the layers. The bit passes through finish coat, brown coat, and lath. Each layer needs slightly different pressure, and knowing the feel is what keeps the hole clean.
We also handle the other quirk of older Lexington homes: wallpaper, sometimes several layers deep. We cut through it cleanly and mount over it — the mount plate covers the area anyway.
What Mount Type Works on Plaster
Any mount type can go on a plaster wall; the difference is in the anchoring. A fixed or tilting mount holds the TV close to the wall, which means less leverage, and two well-placed bolts in studs handle it easily. A full-motion mount pulls the TV away from the wall and swings it, multiplying the leverage on every anchor — so on plaster, we're even more insistent that the main bolts land in studs. For the same reason, we don't recommend a full-motion mount on plaster without studs behind the mounting area; a tilting mount is usually the better call on those walls.
